We often get common questions from customers who are interested in starting a new tile project. If you’re considering a tile install in your home or business, we’ve broken down what you need to know to help you make your tile decisions!
What is the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile?
Many people wonder about the difference between ceramic and porcelain tile. The main difference between them, is the way that they are made. Porcelain tiles are fired in a kiln at higher temperatures than ceramic tile, making them denser and a lot more durable than a ceramic tile. Because they are denser, porcelain tiles have a lower water absorption rate than a ceramic tile. However, generally speaking, ceramic tiles are going to cost less and are easier to cut and work with.
Is tile waterproof?
Long story short, no. While most tiles have a low absorption rate, they will absorb some water and allow vapor transmission through them. Additionally, grout joints will act the same. This is why when tile is installed in a wet location, it is very important to consider the substrate behind the tile to make sure it can handle the water that may get behind the tile.
What is the difference between glazed and unglazed tile?
Glazed tile has a protective coating on the top of the tile, where unglazed tile does not have the protective coating. Where your tile is being installed will depend on whether you should use a glazed or unglazed tile. For example, we recommend unglazed tiles for wet or heavy traffic areas such as a laundry room or bathroom flooring. Glazed tiles are generally used for areas such as kitchen backsplashes where you are looking for a smooth, non-porous finish.
How hard is it to keep tile clean?
With regular cleaning and the right cleaning materials, tile installations are pretty easy to maintain. We recommend avoiding using any harsh cleaners like bleach as these can damage the tile or grout. A light vinegar solution or a cleaner made especially for tile will be the best solution for cleaning. If stains do develop, make sure to contact us as there are specialty products that can help get rid of stains. For kitchen tile, we offer solutions such as epoxy grout, which is an extra stain resistant option for those who tend to be a little more messy in the kitchen.
